Justice For Ejaz Choudry: A Community Comes Together

On the evening of Saturday June 20th 2020, a 62 year old man by the name of Ejaz Choudry was fatally shot in his apartment by Peel Regional Police. The family had called the non emergency line for medical assistance because Ejaz was dealing with a mental health crisis, but was instead shot by police.

The family and community are demanding answers and the firing of the police officers who shot him. It has been over a week with multiple protests and still no answer from anyone on why this incident had happened.

Going to couple of the peaceful protests this past week I got to witness something beautiful that we normally do not get to see. The community of Malton, ON came together in support of Ejaz Choudry and his family. This community of people are from various faiths, cultures, ethnicities, backgrounds, young and old, and different organizations, all showing their support and protesting against police violence. What is even more amazing, families of other fallen victims of police brutality came out showed support and demanded answers.

For all that is going on in 2020, family, friends, colleagues, community members are distant from one another yet we are closer than ever with one common goal, end the killing of people who experience mental health crisis and are from Black, Indigenous and racialized communities.

Here are some photos from the protests.
